Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1178 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/04/04 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Lord of The Flies Essay Did you like this example? Maybe there is a beast maybe its only us'(Golding 82). William Golding writes its only us as he believes that every man has a darker side, an inner beast that is proven inescapable by moral depravity. Throughout Lord of the flies, the young British boys stranded on an island will attempt to suppress mens darker side by governing themselves, nonetheless; their evil instincts will eventually present itself causing division among the boys. Ralph, the oldest of the group, will strive to keep the boys civilized through rules and order while Jack tries to cause chaos and bring out the savagery of the boys. Ultimately, William Golding uses Jacks actions and the symbolism of the spear to prove that the proper and civilized behaviour will fade away and mans evil instincts will take over without the presence of civilization. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Jack Becomes More Violent" essay for you Create order Golding reveals in the absence of civilization men will resort to their primitive evil instincts through the progression of Jacks action in the novel. Days after the boys plane crashed, Jack and his hunters decide to hunt for pigs, instead of keeping the fire going which cause them to miss an opportunity of getting rescued. I cut the pigs throat, said Jack, proudly (Golding 69). Jack who was overjoyed by the fact that he killed a pig announced his accomplishment to the boys. Being separated by civilization, Jack takes advantage of the freedom and begins to reveal his inner evilness through killing another creature. Golding uses the word proudly to reveal the darker side of Jack as isnt ashamed of what he has done, yet feels the joy and excitement when slitting a pigs throat. Moreover, Jack becomes more violent as the book progresses. When Ralph successfully wounded a boar by the sea, the boys celebrated their excitement by mocking the pig hunt as Robert pretends to be the pig. All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife (Golding 114). Robert begins to yell asking for the boys to stop since they became overly excited and violent; Jack pulled Roberts hair and waved his knife in the air. Jacks actions of pulling Roberts hair demonstrates his violent instincts as he not only injures the pigs but also hurts one of his people; furthermore, as there are no adults and plenty of freedom on the island, he grows wild and careless leading him to brandish his knife in the moment of excitement. Golding uses Jacks behaviour to reveal that without civilization where there are rules and order, man will resort to their primitive instincts causing a frenzy among the boys and Jack brandishing his knife. Lastly, after Jacks tribe caused Piggy fell off the cliff and cracked open his head, Jack felt powerful and in control. Viciously, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph. The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralphs ribs, then sheared off and fell in the water (181). Jack aimed for Ralph and aggressively threw his spear; the sharpened end ripped through the skin and flesh of his ribs and then fell in the water. Jacks ambition and evilness grew the longer he was separated from society; he becomes vicious as he hurled his spear at Ralph. Golding demonstrates that man resort on the primitive evil instincts when he describes Jack throwing the spear at Ralph viciously, with full intention. Golding uses the symbolism of the spear to demonstrate that in the absence of civilization, mens unrestrained barbarity will reveal itself due to their primitive instincts. When Jack and the boys decide to go hunting in the forest, they hide behind the scattered trees waiting for the pigs to get closer to attack. The drove of pigs started up; and at a range of only ten yards the wooden spears with fire-hardened points flew toward the chosen pig. One piglet, with a demented shriek, rushed into the sea trailing Rogers spear behind it. The sow gave a gasping squeal and staggered up, with two spears sticking in her fat flank (Golding 134). As the pigs get closer, the hunters come out behind the trees and throw their sharpened spears towards one pig just ten yards away; one piglet who is terrified cries out while the sow squeals as it got struck by two spears. The spear symbolises violence and savagery as it is a weapon to kill and hurt; the words fire-hardened points describes the sharpness of the spear indicating the damage it can cause to another creature. The boys use of the spear causing the pigs to shriek and squeal reveals that without rules and order to suppress mens darker side, their evilness will lead them to destructive actions. Again, when Jack and Roger hunt for more pigs, they stab and wound the sow with their spear. The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high pitched scream (Golding 135). Jack and Roger throw their spear towards the sow who is frightened; when the spear hits the sow, its squealing changed to screams of pain. The evilness and violence that the spear represent are presented when Golding describes the pigs terrified squealing becoming a high pitched scream; by hunting with the spears, it is like using evilness to harm and kill. The pain that the spears caused on the pigs reflect on the evilness of the boys and how they are becoming unruly. Towards the end of the novel where Jack and Ralph split up into two groups, Jacks tribe purposely injured Ralph with a spear. The bruised flesh was inches in diameter over his right ribs, with a swollen and bloody scar where the spear had hit him (Golding 183). Ralphs right ribs were swollen and bruised as the spear cut through his skin and left him a big bloody scar. The violence and savagery the spear symbolises grow from injuring another pig to now Ralph; the damage that the spear caused Ralph reveals that the boys have become more vicious as they live without civilization. The evil instincts within the boys are now coming through in the absence of rules and order. Through Jacks actions and the symbolism of the spear, William Golding proved that without civilization, man will resort to his primitive and oftentimes evil instincts. Through the novel, Golding uses Jacks action and the symbolism of the spear multiple times to show the progression on how evilness can come out of men when removed from society. As there are no rules and order the boys have to follow, the boys slowly realised that they have plenty of freedom. Their evil instincts caused them to make violent decisions and caused them to end up killing one and another. The message of the book is to address the importance of rules and order as they help us be civilized and think logically. Without it, savagery can appear which lead to chaos and division. Lack of order and civilization will allow the savage beast inside all human to reveal itself and cause people to become vicious.

Slavery and Racism In Early Colonies free essay sample
Today, the idea of slavery is taboo in Western society while racism is still a very real thing. Slavery was a huge part of the early colonies of America. You might be surprised to read that Africans, not Indians, were the first American slaves. By 1617, one hundred and twenty five years after Columbus and his European men arrived in North America; Virginian had become an established colony and they were in trouble. They had lost hundreds as a result of starvation and had become desperate for both food and labor. This, you could say was the historical force behind slavery in the colonies. Virginia could not enslave the Indians; they were outnumbered and would have lost lives trying to do so. It was normal for the white people to look at the black men as slaves, because Portuguese and Spanish people had been stamping them as slaves for hundreds Of years before that. We will write a custom essay sample on Slavery and Racism In Early Colonies or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The historical force that led to slavery in the colonies was the fact that the white men were new to America. The Indians thrived off the land and were at home there while the English people struggled to adjust to their new world. Like it says in Drawing The Color Line: There may have been a kind of restated rage at their own ineptitude, at the Indian superiority at taking care of themselves that made the Virginians especially ready to become the masters of slaves Of course the African people were going to be used as slaves in the colonies. They were not considered savages as the Indians were, they were as advanced as the English and going through crisis of their own, making them easy to target and good for the modern work of the English. This leads me to my next topic, was the color of their skin, or circumstance that led to not only slavery, but such hate and racism in America as well? The slaves taken from Africa couldnt brace themselves enough for what they would be going the roug h once they found themselves in the colonies. They were mistreated and overworked, beaten and belittled. It was to be expected that the English forced them to work with nothing in return. And it was to be predicted that there would be some type of superiority of the English over their black slaves, leading to hatred on both sides. The English serfs needed to produce goods to sell and trade and they needed cheap labor to do so. Therefore the societal divisions between serfs and slaves ere insuppressible. To capture and transport Africans and force them to be slaves, we could say is racism in its self. T is taking a certain race and belittling them by refusing their rights to fair labor and living. Treating them like animals, throwing them into cages and leashing them while be transported to America. Then, once they are here, the English overworked and beat them for years and years. Leading to a conflict up until this day! It was historical circumstances that started racism but human choice continue it. Slavery is considered taboo in North America today, but racism is still a ere huge part of our culture. After civil war and color segregation racism had slowed. I take my hat off to the African slaves who broke their backs in order to build this country. To me, the English people had the right idea, purchase slaves to work for free so that they could invest. Although, it is terribly sad that Africa Americans were targeted for that reason. Who knows what The Elicited states would be without the enslavement of the Africans in the early colonies.

Frankenstein Study Guide
Frankenstein Study Guide Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, is a classic horror novel and a prime example of the Gothic genre. Published in 1818, Frankenstein tells the story of an ambitious scientist and the monster he creates. The unnamed creature is a tragic figure who becomes violent and murderous after being rejected by society. Frankenstein remains potent for its commentary on the potential consequences of a singleminded search for enlightenment, as well as the importance of family and belonging.à Fast Facts: Frankenstein Author: Mary ShelleyPublisher: Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor JonesYear Published: 1818Genre: Gothic, horror, science fictionType of Work: NovelOriginal Language: EnglishThemes: Pursuit of knowledge, importance of family, nature and the sublimeCharacters: Victor Frankenstein, the creature, Elizabeth Lavenza, Henry Clerval, Captain Robert Walton, the De Lacey FamilyNotable Adaptions: Frankenstein (1931 Universal Studios film), Mary Shelleys Frankenstein (1994 film directed by Kenneth Branagh)Fun Fact: Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein because of a horror story competition between herself and the poets Lord Byron and Percy Shelley (her husband). Plot Summary Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist whose main ambition is to uncover the source of life. He succeeds at creating life from death- a creature in the semblance of a man- but is horrified by the result. The creature is hideous and deformed. Frankenstein runs away, and when he returns, the creature has fled. Time passes, and Frankenstein learns that his brother, William, has been killed. He escapes to the wilderness to mourn, and the creature seeks him out to tell his story. The creature explains that after his creation, his appearance caused everyone he encountered to either hurt him or run away from him. Alone and desperate, he settled by the cottage of a family of impoverished peasants. He tried to befriend them, but they fled from his presence, and he killed William out of rage from neglect. He asks Frankenstein to create a female companion for him so that he may not be alone. Frankenstein agrees, but doesnt keep his promise, as he believes the experiment is immoral and disastrous experiment. Thus, the creature vows to ruin Frankensteinââ¬â¢s life and proceeds to kill all whom Frankenstein holds dear. The monster strangles Frankensteinââ¬â¢s wife Elizabeth on their wedding night. Frankenstein then resolves to destroy the creature once and for all. He follows him north, chasing him to the North Pole, where he crosses paths with Captain Walton and reveals his entire story. In the end, Frankenstein dies, and the creature vows to travel as far north as possible to end his own tragic life. Major Characters Victor Frankenstein is the protagonist of the novel. He is an ambitious scientist obsessed with the search for scientific truth. The consequences of his discovery leads to a life of ruin and loss. The creature is the unnamed monster Frankenstein creates. Despite his gentle and compassionate demeanor, he is rejected by society because of his grotesque appearance. He grows cold-hearted and violent as a result. Captain Robert Walton is the narrator who opens and closes the novel. A failed poet turned captain, he is on an expedition to the North Pole. He listens to Frankensteins tale and mirrors the reader as the receptor of the novels warnings. Elizabeth Lavenza is Frankensteins adopted cousin and eventual wife. She is an orphan, yet she finds love and acceptance easily because of her beauty and nobility- a direct contrast to the creatures failed attempts to find a sense of belonging. Henry Clerval is Frankensteins best friend and foil. He loves to study the humanities and is concerned with morality and chivalry. He is ultimately strangled to death by the monster. The De Lacey Family lives in a cottage close to the creature. They are peasants who have fallen on hard times, but the creature idolizes them and their gentle ways. The De Laceys serve as a prime example of familial support in the novel. Major Themes Pursuit of Knowledge. Shelley examines the anxieties surrounding technological and scientific advancement through the character of Victor Frankenstein. Frankensteins discovery and its disastrous consequences suggest that the singleminded pursuit of knowledge is a dangerous path. Importance of Family. The creature is shunned by everyone he encounters. Lacking familial acceptance and belonging, his relatively peaceful nature shifts to malice and hatred. In addition, the ambitious Frankenstein alienates himself from family and friends in order to focus on his work; later, several of his loved ones die at the hands of the creature, a direct result of Frankensteins ambition. By contrast, Shelleys depiction of the De Lacey family shows the reader the benefits of unconditional love. Nature and the Sublime. Shelley evokes images of natural landscapes in order to put human trials into perspective. In the novel, nature stands in opposition to humankinds struggles. Despite scientific breakthroughs, nature remains unknowable and all-powerful. Nature is the ultimate force that kills Frankenstein and the creature, and it is too dangerous a force for Captain Walton to conquer on his expedition. Literary Style Shelley wrote Frankenstein in the horror genre. The novel features Gothic imagery and is heavily informed by Romanticism. There are countless poetic passages on the power and beauty of natural landscapes, and the language often refers to questions of purpose, meaning, and truth. About the Author Born in 1797, Mary Shelley was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft. Shelley was 21 when Frankenstein was published. With Frankenstein, Shelley set the precedent for monster novels and created an early example of the science fiction genre that remains influential to this day.
